Animal Reiki is a technique of working with animals that helps them relax and reduces stress. Reiki is especially helpful for rescue and shelter animals. Reiki can be offered in person or remotely.
Reiki is perfect for animals because it’s not invasive. It’s gentle, yet powerful, doesn’t require physical contact, and it doesn’t cause any harmful effects such as pain, discomfort, or stress. Animals respond intuitively to Reiki and they understand that it supports the healing of emotional, behavioral, and physical injuries and ailments.
What Does a Reiki Practitioner Do?
Reiki practitioners use intention, focus and meditation to channel energy into the animal. When animals are stressed, sick or injured, energetically, they are “imbalanced”. By offering an energetic connection and balancing, the practitioner is offering the animal a support system that the animal can use to relax, self-heal, and “rebalance.”
The practitioner may or may not touch the pet. It depends on the comfort of the pet. Often during the first session, the practitioner may not make contact at all. Pets may move around the room while they get comfortable with receiving energy. It isn’t necessary to stay quiet or still during Reiki and owners can definitely be in the room, if desired. The length of the session will depend entirely on the pet, but will generally be about 30 to 45 minutes. Frequency and quantity of sessions will be determined by the pet’s response. Multiple visits are typically needed, although improvement is often notable after the first session.

I also suggest that you consider learning Reiki for yourself. With as little as a Reiki Level One attunement, you too can connect with your beloved pet and allow the flow of uplifting, relaxing Reiki energy between you. See the Become a Reiki Practitioner page for additional details.
